While log houses are being built for many centuries, the production of glued laminated timber houses is a completely new technology. Logs for such houses are glued from wooden beams, and then further machined. Logs can be glued vertically or horizontally. It is very important that the logs glue together with an environmentally friendly glue that allows air and water to pass. It saves the natural properties of wooden houses so that they have the ability to “breathe”. Only softwood is used to make beams for glued beams. The wood is dried in special drying chambers until it reaches 10-12% moisture content. The dried boards are planted to provide them with an exact geometric shape. Then they are sorted and glued into bars. The number of glued lamellae can vary from 5 and higher. This allows to make a fairly “thick” (up to 200 mm) glued beam.
Glued laminated timber houses, for permanent residence, look like from a picture and have an attractive European look. From these materials most buildings are being built on ski resorts, and it is because of a large number of tangible advantages compared with the integral material. Glulam houses, for permanent residence, are warmer compare to log houses. This is due to lower thermal conductivity and the absence of cracks in the structure.
